Employee Relations is now one of the most complex areas of HR driven by ever increasing employment legislation, frequently changing case law, a society all too willing to engage in litigation and the availability of ‘free’ information and advice via digital media.
Employers naturally respond by creating policies and procedures that aim to both protect and systemise their procedures when confronted by people issues. That however, frequently results in bureaucratic, time consuming and often expensive procedures to the detriment of common sense with a focus on process rather than end result.
My approach is based on pragmatism using the law and business processes as a framework rather than the be all and end all and, wherever possible, looking to prevent the issue arising in the first place e.g. quality of recruitment, sensible and understandable HR policies and procedures and line manager training.
